How to Climb in League of Legends Ranked: 8 Tips

By the LUM.GG team · Updated October 22, 2026 · 2 min read

Climbing in ranked is about playing better on average, not about winning every game. These habits help you win a few more games out of every ten, and that's what gains LP over time.

Keep a small champion pool

Playing 2 or 3 champions in your main role helps you learn their matchups, power spikes and limits. Every game on a new champion is a game where you're still learning the basics. Pick champions that do well in the current tier list and fit your style, then stick with them.

Farm better

Many games in lower ranks are decided by gold, and most gold comes from minions. Going from 5 to 7 CS per minute is worth about as much as several extra kills per game. Our wave management guide shows how.

Play for objectives

Kills don't win games, buildings do. After you win a fight or get a kill, look for the next objective: a turret, a dragon, a top side objective or Baron. A lead that never turns into objectives disappears fast.

Watch the minimap

Look at the minimap every few seconds. When enemies are missing, play safer. When you see the enemy jungler on one side, the other side is safe to push. This one habit prevents a lot of deaths.

Die less

  • Don't walk into dark areas without wards when enemies are missing.
  • Back off when your key spells like Flash are on cooldown and the enemy's aren't.
  • Recall when you're low. The gold you lose by going back is less than the gold you give by dying.

Every death gives gold to the enemy and takes you off the map. Dying one time less per game helps more than one extra kill.

Know your job in fights

Every champion has a job in team fights: start the fight, protect the carry, deal damage from the back or catch one target. Before a fight, know who you want to hit and who you need to avoid. If you're unsure, stay with your team and hit the closest target you can reach safely.

Protect your mental

  • Mute players who flame. You can unmute them later if you need their calls.
  • Stop after two losses in a row that leave you angry.
  • Focus on what you control: your farm, your deaths and your decisions.

Learn from your games

After a loss, watch one or two of your deaths in the replay and ask why they happened. Look up your recent games on our summoner lookup to see your CS, damage and win rate by champion. Fixing one habit at a time is how players climb steadily.

Two or three in your main role, plus one or two for your backup role. A small pool lets you learn matchups and play with more confidence.
