TFT Economy Guide: Interest, Streaks and When to Spend

By the LUM.GG team · Updated October 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Gold decides almost everything in TFT. More gold means more levels and more rolls, and that turns into a stronger board later. This guide shows how income works and how to use it without losing too much health.

Where your gold comes from

Each player round pays you from a few sources:

SourceHow it works
Base incomeA fixed amount every round. It's the same for everyone.
Interest1 gold for every 10 gold you hold at the start of the round, up to 5.
Streak bonusExtra gold for winning or losing several player rounds in a row. Longer streaks pay more.
Winning a roundA small bonus for each player round you win.
Monster roundsSome loot drops contain gold.
Selling unitsYou get gold back when you sell a champion. A 1 star unit refunds its full cost.

Base income is the same for everyone. Interest and streaks are the parts you control, so the players who handle them well end up with the most gold.

Interest and the 50 gold rule

Interest is counted when the round starts. At 49 gold you get 4 interest, at 50 you get 5. That's why players try to end their turn on a round number like 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50.

  • Before you buy or roll, check if it drops you below a 10 mark. Going from 31 to 29 costs you 1 gold every round you stay there.
  • Above 50 gold you get no extra interest. Gold over 50 is only useful if you plan a big spend soon.
  • Early in the game, buying a pair that helps you win can be worth breaking an interest mark.

Quick math: holding 50 gold for 5 rounds earns 25 gold from interest alone. That's 12 rerolls or 6 XP purchases.

Win streaks and loss streaks

Streak gold rewards consistency. Win several player rounds in a row and you earn bonus gold each round. Lose several in a row and you earn the same bonus. One win or loss in between resets the count.

Win streaking

A strong early board wins rounds, keeps your health high and earns streak gold at the same time. If your opening is strong, spend a little to keep it strong: buy upgrades and level when it helps you keep winning.

Loss streaking

If your opening is weak, you can lean into it: keep a cheap board, save gold and collect loss streak gold. The upside is a big gold lead and an early pick at the carousel. The downside is health, and you need enough of it left to get strong later.

Losing on purpose is a plan, not an excuse. Set a health limit before you start, for example 50, and end the streak when you reach it.

The worst spot is swinging between wins and losses: no streak gold and steady health loss. If you notice that pattern, decide which way to push.

When to spend your gold

Saving is only half of economy. The other half is spending at the right time. Common moments to spend:

  • Your health gets low. Around 40 health or less, every loss hurts. Spend to make the board stronger now.
  • Your comp's key level. Many comps roll at a set level to find their carry, like level 7 or level 8. Reaching that level with a full bank lets you roll a lot.
  • You play a reroll comp. Reroll comps roll a little each round with the gold above 50 to find 3 star copies while keeping interest.
  • You're close to a big upgrade. Two pairs on the bench and a good chance at a 2 star carry are worth a few rolls.

Check the meta comps to see the playstyle and level each comp uses. The leveling and rolling guide explains the main rolling styles.

Health is a resource too

Health is what lets you save gold. Spending 20 health to earn 15 extra gold is a fine trade early, and a terrible one at 30 health late in the game. Think of health as a budget you can spend while you build your economy.

  • Early stages deal little damage, so losing there is cheap.
  • Damage grows every stage. A loss late in the game costs much more than one in stage 2.
  • If you have the most health in the lobby, you can save longer than everyone else.

Common economy mistakes

  • Rolling all your gold in stage 2 for no clear reason, then sitting at 0 gold with a weak board.
  • Sitting on 50 or more gold with low health instead of spending it.
  • Selling pairs just to hit an interest mark when you'll need them a round later.
  • Ignoring streaks and ending up with a win, loss, win, loss pattern.
  • Forgetting that saved gold is worth nothing once you're knocked out.

FAQ

How does interest work in TFT?

At the start of every round you earn 1 gold for each 10 gold you have saved, up to 5 gold when you hold 50 or more.

Should I always save to 50 gold?

No. 50 gold is the goal when your health is safe. If your health is low or your board is falling behind, spending is better than saving.

Is loss streaking good in TFT?

It can be, when your opening is weak and the lobby isn't punishing you hard. Plan where to stop, because you need health left to use the gold.
