TFT Leveling and Rolling Guide: Reroll, Fast 8 and Fast 9

Every comp in TFT wants either more levels or more rolls. Knowing which one your comp needs, and when to switch, is one of the biggest steps up you can make as a player.

What a level gives you

Buying XP costs 4 gold for 4 experience, and you also get a little XP for free every round. Each level does two things:

  • One more slot on the board. At level 7 you can field 7 champions, at level 8 you can field 8.
  • Better shop odds. Higher levels show more 4 and 5 cost champions and fewer 1 costs.

The second point is why players level before rolling for expensive carries. At a low level, a 4 cost carry almost never shows up, no matter how much you roll.

Shop odds in short

The exact odds change between sets, but the pattern stays the same:

LevelWhat the shop looks like
4 to 5Mostly 1 cost champions with some 2 costs. Rolling here is for 1 cost reroll comps.
6More 2 cost champions. A common level for 1 and 2 cost reroll.
7Lots of 2 and 3 cost champions. A common level for 3 cost reroll.
8The main level to find 4 cost carries.
9 and upThe best odds of 5 cost champions.

Before you roll, count how many copies of your carry other players hold. If three players share a champion, it gets much harder to find.

Reroll comps (slow roll)

Reroll comps are built around cheap champions at 3 star. You stay at a low level, keep 50 gold and spend only the gold above 50 on rolls each round. That's called slow rolling.

  • Best when you already hold pairs of a 1, 2 or 3 cost carry early.
  • Strong in the middle of the game, so your health stays high.
  • Weaker late if the comp can't add 4 and 5 cost champions after it's done.
  • A contested reroll comp fails hard, so scout before you commit.

Once your reroll carries reach 3 star, stop rolling, level up and add strong expensive units around them.

Fast 8

Fast 8 is the most common plan. You keep a decent board, build interest and level to 8, usually early in stage 4. Then you roll to find your 4 cost carries and upgrade them to 2 star.

  • It works with almost any opening, so it's the default when you're unsure.
  • You need a board that doesn't lose too much health before stage 4.
  • Your 4 cost carry matters most. Keep its items ready until you find it.

Putting items on a placeholder is fine: when you sell a champion, its items go back to your bench and you can give them to the real carry.

Fast 9

Fast 9 skips most of the rolling at level 8 and saves for level 9 to find 5 cost champions. It only works when your board is strong enough to keep you safe at 8, or when your health is high.

  • Good when you're win streaking with a stable board.
  • Risky in lobbies where many players roll early and hit strong boards.
  • Great with augments that give extra XP or gold.

How to pick the right plan each game

  1. Look at what you hold after stage 2. Pairs of a cheap carry point to reroll.
  2. Check your items. Some comps need specific items to work.
  3. Scout the lobby. If 2 other players go for your comp, change plans.
  4. Watch your health. Low health means rolling earlier, even if it's not the ideal level.
  5. When in doubt, play fast 8 with the strongest board you can.

Each comp on our meta comps page shows its playstyle, like reroll or fast 8, so you know the plan before the game starts.

FAQ

What does fast 8 mean in TFT?

It means saving gold and leveling to 8 quickly, usually early in stage 4, then rolling for 4 cost carries.

When should I roll down in TFT?

Roll when you reach your comp's key level, when your health drops low or when a few rolls can finish a big upgrade.

What is slow rolling?

Keeping 50 gold and rolling only with the gold above it every round. Reroll comps use it to find 3 star champions without losing interest.
