How to play 2048

You get a 4x4 board with two starting tiles. Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go in one direction. When two tiles with the same number bump into each other, they merge into one tile worth their sum, so two 8s become a 16.

After each move a new tile shows up in a random empty spot. It is a 2 most of the time and a 4 about one time in ten. A tile can only merge once per move, so 4, 4, 8 sliding left gives 8, 8, not 16.

Build a 2048 tile to win. You can then keep going for 4096 and beyond. The game ends when the board is full and no two neighbors match.

2048 tips for a high score

Pick one corner and keep your biggest tile there. Most good runs only use three directions, for example left, down and right, and press up only when nothing else moves.

Keep the row next to that corner full and sorted from big to small. Then each new merge rolls down the line into your corner tile like a chain.

When you are forced to press the fourth direction, press the opposite one right after to push your big tile back into its corner.

How undo works in 2048

Slipped a finger? Undo takes back your last move along with the points it gave you. It only goes back one step, so a second press right after does nothing.

Every game starts with 3 undos, shown as the small number on the Undo button. Each time your biggest tile reaches a new size from 128 up, like 128, 256 or 512, you earn one back. You can hold 3 at most.

Out of moves? The game over card has an Undo button too, as long as you still have one left. And if you undo and repeat the same move, the new tile lands in the exact same spot, so undo fixes slips but never rerolls a bad tile.

How scoring works in 2048

Each merge adds the value of the new tile to your score. Two 64s merging give you 128 points, and a move that makes several merges adds them all up. Undo also takes back the points from that move.

Your best score updates the moment you beat it, is saved on this device and shows up both in the BEST box and below the board.

Can you play 2048 on your phone?

Yes. Swipe on the board to slide the tiles and tap Undo to go back one move. There is nothing to install, it runs right in your mobile browser.

Your board is saved after every move, so if you close the tab or reload the page you pick up right where you stopped.
