How to play Ludo

Each color starts with its tokens in the corner base. Players take turns rolling the die and moving one token that many squares clockwise around the board. After a full lap a token turns into the colored column of its own color and walks up to the center.

The first player to bring every token to the center wins. If someone else gets there first you keep racing for 2nd and 3rd place, and the end screen shows a podium with everyone in finishing order.

Ludo rules: rolling a 6, capturing and safe squares

You need a 6 to bring a token out of the base onto your start square. A 6 also gives you another roll, but three 6s in a row and your turn is over. Capturing a token or getting one home earns a bonus roll too.

Land on a square where another color stands and that token goes back to its base. The four colored start squares and the four star squares are safe, nobody gets captured there. To reach the center you need the exact number, a roll that goes past it cannot be used for that token.

Ludo tips to beat the computer

Get two or three tokens onto the board early so every roll has a good use. Stop on star squares when an opponent is a few squares behind you, and hit tokens that sit 1 to 6 squares ahead of yours, since they cost the other player the most.

The computer comes in three levels. Easy moves almost at random. Normal hunts for captures, safe squares and home runs but slips now and then. Hard always picks its best move and runs from danger. Start on Easy with younger kids and move up when they win often.

Ludo for 2, 3 or 4 players on one device

On the setup screen tap each color to switch it between Player, Computer and Off. Any mix works, from one kid against three computers to four friends passing the phone around. Pick 4 tokens for the classic game or 2 tokens for a match that takes about half as long. The first match is set to 2 tokens, and the game remembers your choice for next time.

The glowing corner, the arrow on the die and the name tag show whose turn it is. Your wins against the computer are counted on this device as your record.

Can you play Ludo on your phone?

Yes. Tap anywhere on the board to roll, then tap one of the bouncing tokens. When only one move is possible the token goes by itself. Tokens are easy to hit because a tap near a token counts, and the full screen button makes the board fill the whole phone.
